Birds

Birds are warm blooded, vertebrates. They are best known for having feathers, wings, a toothless beak and (generally) the ability to fly. Birds lay hard shelled eggs in nests and raise their young, until they learn to fly. Some birds such as penguins and ostriches, do not fly, but still posses wings and feathers. Birds can be found in almost every environment throughout the world.

Dinosaurs

The word prehistoric refers to a period of time before human existence on Earth. The planet was teaming with creatures. Some have adapted and still live among us today, but most are extinct and can only be found in museums and books. The most famous of the prehistoric creatures are the Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were enormous reptiles that inhabited Earth about 200,000 years ago.

Mammals

Mammals are invertebrates, which means they have a spine, or backbone. They are also warm blooded, meaning they regulate their own body temperature. This allows mammals to thrive in almost any climate around the globe. Another distinguishable characteristic of mammals is the presence of hair on their bodies and ability to feed their young milk that is produced by mammary glands.

Fish are cold blooded, vertebrates that live in water. They have no limbs or lungs. Instead, they have gills that aid them in breathing underwater and fins that allow them to swim underwater.  There are more than 32,000 species of fish that can be found throughout the world.  Fish can be found in almost every aquatic environment.

Amphibians are cold blooded, vertebrates that can often live in water and on land. Young amphibians generally go through a process known as metamorphosis, in which larva with gills transform into adults with lungs and the ability to breathe air. Amphibians have the unique ability to use their skin as a second respiratory surface. Some amphibians, such as frogs, use their skin to absorb moisture to hydrate themselves, instead of drinking water.

Invertebrates are animals that do not have a spine, or back bone. Instead, some have hydrostatic skeletons (fluid filled) such as jelly fish and worms. Other animals, like mollusks and insects, have hard outer shells, known as exoskeletons. Invertebrates make up a more than 95% of the animal kingdom.

Insects are small invertebrates. Instead of having a spine, insects have an exoskeleton that is made up of three parts; the head, thorax, and abdomen. They have six jointed legs, antennae, and compound eyes. Many insects have one or two sets of wings. There are over a million known species of insects, which make them the most diverse group of animals on the planet.

Reptiles are cold blooded, vertebrates that are known for their scaly skin and their ability to lay eggs. Reptiles can be found all over the world, except in the extreme climate of Antartica. Most reptiles live on land in warm, dry regions, but some reptiles, such as Sea Turtles, have adapted to living in the water. Despite their aquatic nature, sea turtles have lungs instead of gills, and need to come to the surface to breathe. They also lay their eggs on land, before returning to the ocean.
